Oxbow World Longboard Championship - Fuerteventura 1998

Fuerteventura is the mellowest of all the Canary Islands located 95kms to the west of Africa.
It probably has the smallest surfer-to-wave count in Europe, except for when a competition and an army of surfers descend on it. The Oxbow championship brought a lot of people to the Island.
Many of the locals where annoyed with the extra attention the competition brought, and will bring, to the island and its surf through magazine writeups etc., some even continued to surf Hierro while the competition took place.

The competition was won by Joel Tudor.
There were a lot of world class surfers in Fuerteventura : Bonga Perkins, Chris 'Guts' Griffiths, Josh Baxter, James Teal, Rusty Keaulana, Will Eastham, Lance Hookana and Nat Young's kid Beau (BooHoo).

There was a lot of good surfing with a few shock knock-outs earlier on in the heats.
There was also a bit of action in Corralejo town with one of the Hawaiian team getting drunk, throwing chairs, picking fights and eventually head butting another competitor.
There was also the incident that gained Beau Young (Nat's kid) to earn the nickname BooHoo.
He'd had too many beers in town and decided to mouth off about how he didn't care if the locals couldn't get any waves as most of them are crap in any case. One local who owns a bar in Corralejo took offence and pushed BooHoo in the head. This caused Boo Hoo to take flight and he was reported to have been seen outside the club later, crying.
He was seen later in the week outside Corky's bar in Corralejo full of booze and full of himself, kicking girls. What a lovely kid.

Yeap, it was a little hectic with the competition in town, but they left as quickly as they came. Fuerteventura has thankfully for now returned to its quiet, relaxed way of life, the weekly coming and going of package holiday makers and travelling surfers.
